They are angry about a violent crackdown on student activists in Tiananmen Square. The government has said it will investigate the crackdown. Police responded with tear gas and live ammunition after protesters blocked highways. Officials say 13 people were killed. A defence ministry spokesman said those killed had been armed with "sharp tools" and were "using them against the police". It is not known how many people died during the protests in Tiananmen Square, known as "the Goddess of Democracy". The students and activists calling for democracy in China say 13 were killed, but correspondents say official statistics are hard to verify. 'Tear gas wafted through the streets' The protests, which started last Friday, have paralysed Beijing. Rallies were held in more than 100 cities in 29 provinces and autonomous regions across China. Police took to the streets in response, firing tear gas and using batons to disperse students and protesters in the capital, Beijing. She says many protesters were university students. Protesters in front of Beijing's main government offices held placards that said: "Equal rights and democracy for all citizens!" and "Democracy now!" They also held up portraits of the student protesters who were killed in 1989, including a photo of Liu Xiaobo.
